SUMMARY:ROSS BLECKNER: NEVER THE LESS
DESCRIPTION:Ross Bleckner emerged as a leading artist in New York during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s\, creating paintings that explore change\, loss\, memory\, and the human body. A central figure in the decade’s revival of painting\, he developed a practice that merges psychological\, social\, and political themes within a strong conceptual framework. In 1995\, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York presented a mid-career retrospective of his work\, underscoring his importance in contemporary art.\nNEVER THE LESS will highlight a lesser-known part of Bleckner’s process\, offering new insight into one of the most prolific painters of our time. Bleckner begins by making his own paint and testing it on black paper\, where the experimental brushwork often produces striking results. From there\, he creates a series of small canvases that gradually increase in scale\, leading to the large paintings for which he is best known.\nOver decades\, this approach has yielded hundreds—if not thousands—of works. Guild Hall presents a selection of these rarely seen studies alongside major large-scale paintings. While rooted in process\, the smaller works stand powerfully on their own. Together\, they reveal the breadth of Bleckner’s artistic vision\, offering an expansive view of his practice across time—an illustrated timeline through painting.\nThis exhibition is organized by Melanie Crader\, museum director and curator of visual arts\, with support from Brianna Hernández\, museum registrar and Claire Hunter\, museum coordinator and curatorial associate.\nGALLERY HOURS:\nWEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY\, 12-5 PM from August 9-September 6\nTHURSDAY TO SUNDAY\, 12-5 PM from September 10-October 27 \nNEW: Third Thursdays! On the third Thursday of every month from May through September\, galleries will stay open until 7:30 PM\, and will include live music in the garden and exhibition-related programs to follow.\nMUSEUM ADMISSION:\n$12 / $10 for Seniors\, 65+\nFree for Members\, Children\, and Students \nEvent information: original source

SUMMARY:ERIC FREEMAN: THE VOLUME OF COLOR
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition marks the first major institutional solo presentation of Eric Freeman’s work in the East End\, where the artist lived and worked for many years. Freeman’s radiant abstractions transform color into planes of light and pigment that construct space rather than merely depict it. Layers of luminous varnish and saturated tone generate a visual depth that feels structural—at times almost architectural—drawing viewers into fields of color defined by both intensity and calm.\nThe Volume of Color brings together a selection of paintings alongside a small group of furniture pieces designed by Freeman\, revealing a practice shaped by the productive tension between control and emotion\, precision and presence. His work enters into quiet dialogue with the legacies of Josef Albers\, Dan Flavin\, Donald Judd\, Agnes Martin\, Mark Rothko\, and James Turrell. Freeman’s subtly modulated surfaces\, sleek yet unmistakably hand-painted\, balance intellectual rigor with sensory immediacy\, collapsing distinctions between painting\, object\, and environment.\nPresented following the artist’s death in 2021\, the exhibition honors Freeman’s sustained contribution to contemporary abstraction and affirms his lasting connection to the East End’s artistic landscape\, where his work quietly expanded the possibilities of color\, light\, and spatial experience.\nThis exhibition is co-curated by artist Nathan Dilworth and Melanie Crader\, museum director and curator of visual arts with support from Brianna Hernández\, museum registrar and Claire Hunter\, museum coordinator and curatorial associate.\nGALLERY HOURS:\nWEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY\, 12-5 PM from August 9-September 6\nTHURSDAY TO SUNDAY\, 12-5 PM from September 10-October 27 \nNEW: Third Thursdays! On the third Thursday of every month from May through September\, galleries will stay open until 7:30 PM\, and will include live music in the garden and exhibition-related programs to follow.\nMUSEUM ADMISSION:\n$12 / $10 for Seniors\, 65+\nFree for Members\, Children\, and Students\n  \nEvent information: original source

SUMMARY:IN-PROCESS: J. BOUEY DANCE PROJECTS – THE LIVING ANCESTORS
DESCRIPTION:Go behind the scenes of The Living Ancestors\, a new multimedia dance-theater work conceived and directed by j. bouey\, a 2026 Guild Hall William P. Rayner Artist-in-Residence. Through performance excerpts and conversation\, this In-Process presentation invites audiences into the development of bouey’s ambitious disco-funk space opera. \nGuided by a poetic libretto by Junauda Petrus\, The Living Ancestors imagines a future global society on the precipice of abolishing oppression\, where a renowned band of griots reveals their origins as formerly enslaved clones from the Underground. Drawing on research into Punking and Waacking\, bouey and the company connect these forms to the liberating underground club cultures from which they emerged. \nFeaturing Dane Deveraux’s sonic landscape of funk\, disco\, and house music and George Del Barrio’s Live Performance Camera Obscura projection design\, the work brings movement\, music\, text\, research\, and live media together to build a bold speculative world. \nEvent information: original source

SUMMARY:Full Hunter’s Super Moon Hike
DESCRIPTION:Native Americans named this bright moon for obvious reasons. The leaves are falling from trees\, the deer are fattened\, and it’s time to begin storing up meat for the long winter ahead. Because the fields were traditionally harvested in late September or early October\, hunters could easily see fox and other animals that come out to eat the fallen grains. Join us for this leisurely paced one-hour hike in Vineyard Field\, the field behind the South Fork Natural History Museum (SOFO).\nCo-sponsored by Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt & the South Fork Natural History Museum (SOFO).\nMeet at the SOFO Museum parking lot\, 377 Bridgehampton Turnpike\, 200 yards north of the RR tracks. To register\, email: info@longpondgreenbelt.org.\nHike Leader: Jean McDermott\, 631-599-2391. \nEvent information: original source

DESCRIPTION:Traversing the Atlantic\, Indian and Pacific Oceans\, Silkroad presents a brand new trio seamlessly blending three disparate narratives of language and sound. Three internationally acclaimed\, genre-bending artists who each have been credited with reshaping the landscape of their respective instruments through their unique improvisational styles and compositional voices. \nHailing from Damascus\, Syria\, Kinan Azmeh has been taking the international music scene by storm with his unique blending of Eastern and Western styles\, bombastic improvisation and large-scale compositions for orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic\, the London Philharmonic and the Seattle Symphony. \nAcclaimed composer and instrumentalist Kaoru Watanabe‘s work is grounded in traditional Japanese music while imbued with contemporary jazz\, improvisation\, and experimental music elements\, working with such figures as Laurie Anderson\, Jason Moran and André 3000. \nScottish harper and composer Maeve Gilchrist has been credited with bringing the Celtic harp to new levels of visibility through her unique improvisational and textural approach to the instrument and her collaborations with artists such as from Arooj Aftab\, Yo-Yo Ma\, The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Esperanza Spalding. \nThrough this unique collaboration\, hear three very different voices in conversation with one another as they find the sweet spots of stylistic intersection\, dramatic contrast and virtuosity\, forging an entirely new aesthetic that feels as organic as can be.\nRUSH TICKETS\nA limited number of $25 Rush tickets may be available for Guild Hall-produced programs\, 20 minutes before start time\, in person only.
