Amagansett with Kids

Start with the farm market, keep lunch easy and decide between the ocean and village alternatives after checking the weather and season.

A farm morning and one flexible afternoon anchor

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Five details that define this particular trip.

Named places, local constraints and realistic sequencing—so a first visit feels informed rather than overplanned.

01

Start at Amber Waves

The farm is a working landscape as well as a market; check current programs, supervise children closely and gather picnic food while energy is high.

02

Let the Square stay unstructured

Amagansett Square is best as a snack-and-lawn interval, not a long shopping assignment. It gives the family room to decide what comes next.

03

Atlantic Avenue means real ocean

The broad beach can have strong surf. Confirm guarded hours, parking and conditions, then keep active supervision at the waterline.

04

Pack the meal, not the schedule

Choose provisions from the village market and keep lunch flexible. Check kitchen hours separately from market hours, and leave room for a rest before the afternoon.

Save Montauk for another day

Continuing east can turn a relaxed Amagansett outing into a traffic-heavy itinerary. Stop while the day still feels generous.

A SMART BASE

Amagansett

View places to stay →
Why it works
A smaller, relaxed base for farm life, ocean time and quick trips east to Montauk.
Without a car
The village and square are compact; beaches and farm destinations need a transport plan.
Best rhythm
Farm breakfast, unhurried village time and a single ocean or cultural afternoon.

THE PLAN

Keep the day moving, not rushed

Suggested times are flexible. Check opening hours and allow extra time for children, weather and transport.

Edit my itinerary →
  1. Amber Waves Farm & Market

Explore the farm’s designated visitor areas and gather provisions. Organized children’s activities have their own calendar and booking terms.

  2. A village pause

Keep lunch portable or choose a nearby table, then leave room for browsing rather than rushing to another destination.

  3. Amagansett Life-Saving Station

Visit only during its published May–October weekend hours or an agreed appointment. Outside the season, use the library or a village pause.

  4. Atlantic Avenue Beach

Check weekday daily-parking eligibility or your town permit, seasonal restrooms and staffed swimming conditions before committing.

GOOD TO KNOW

Small decisions that protect the day.

ARRIVAL, ACCESS & ALTERNATIVES

Farm mornings, village browsing and one ocean outing.

Begin around the farm market and village, then decide whether the afternoon belongs at the beach. Keep a library option for rain and treat the Life-Saving Station as a seasonal visit rather than an always-open indoor stop.

Arrive for a compact first stop

Amagansett has a rail station. Check your route from the station to the village or your lodging before traveling, and arrange any onward beach ride. A farm-and-village day can be simpler than carrying beach supplies through several transfers.

A farm visit with flexible timing

Amber Waves Farm & Market is at 367 Main Street. The farm currently lists market hours of 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and kitchen hours of 8 a.m.–3 p.m. daily. Its visit page describes self-guided farm exploration. Check the separate calendar for organized children’s activities and seasonal experiences.

History has a seasonal opening window

The Life-Saving Station museum is at 160 Atlantic Avenue. It lists May–October opening, Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m.–3 p.m., with docent tours during open hours or by appointment. Outside that window, use a village or library alternative instead of assuming the museum is open.

Choose the beach by access

Atlantic Avenue Beach is at 191 Atlantic Avenue. The town lists weekday, non-holiday daily parking and seasonal accessible restrooms; a surf wheelchair is available when lifeguards are on duty. Check the current rules for your day. Indian Wells has a different parking situation, so do not transfer an access assumption between them.

Budget checkpoint
Separate market purchases, any organized farm activity, transport and beach parking. A picnic can keep the day flexible; compare actual prices and bring only the supplies the route needs.
Rainy-day checkpoint
Amagansett Free Library has a children’s section and event calendar. Check the day’s opening and registration requirements. Ordinary browsing is a different visit from a booked program or a library-card-dependent service.
Access checkpoint
Working-farm ground and beach surfaces differ from a village sidewalk. Ask about the route, seating and restroom features you need. Seasonal beach equipment is available only under the operator’s current conditions.
Family checkpoint
Choose farm exploration, a village pause and one afternoon anchor. Do not combine a booked farm activity, a museum visit and a full beach session unless the pace suits your family.

THE PRACTICAL LAYER

Plan for the details that change.

When to go

July and August bring the widest range of openings—and the most traffic. June and September often balance warm weather with a calmer pace. Off-season travel rewards flexibility because hours narrow.

Getting around

A car offers the broadest access, but parking can be the limiting factor. Rail or coach travelers should choose a walkable base and prearrange rides for beaches, lighthouse visits and rural stops.

What to reserve

Book lodging, ticketed cultural programs and one priority dinner. Confirm seasonal hours directly. Avoid filling every meal and hour before weather and traffic reveal the better plan.

Beach reality

Parking rights and shoreline access are different questions. Confirm the governing town or village, permit rules, lifeguard schedule, facilities and current ocean conditions before leaving.

MAKE IT YOURS

Build the trip around one good base.

For this route, Amagansett offers a natural center of gravity. Choose the room first, then reserve only the meals and experiences that matter most.

02 · PLAN ONE TABLE

Choose a memorable meal

03 · LEAVE ROOM

Add one local highlight

Choose a museum, walk, sail or family stop—and keep the rest of the day open.
