BHCCRC BLACK FILM FESTIVAL: WE WANT THE FUNK

Kick off The Center’s Black Film Festival with an evening of film, music, celebration, and plenty of funk. Guests are encouraged to come dressed to impress in their best 1970s style, funk & flair!
WE WANT THE FUNK! is a syncopated voyage through the history of funk music, from its African, soul, and early jazz roots to the explosion of 1970s urban funk and its lasting influence on music and culture.
Featuring the dynamism of James Brown, the extraterrestrial sounds of George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic, the transformation of Labelle, and Fela Kuti’s groundbreaking Afrobeat, the film celebrates the artists and movements that made funk a cultural force while tracing its influence on new wave, hip-hop, and generations of music that followed.
Following the screening, keep the funk going at a special post-screening party celebrating the birthday of The Center’s Executive Director, Bonnie Michelle Cannon. Come ready to dance, celebrate, and get funky!
